I have gone through thousands of these on the websites over the years looking for a No S and ran across this,I have never seen a proof set coin tarnished like this, yes some do get some minor toning but I think this dime is actually blackened,I'm not saying it is silver but sure looks like a silver coin to me,the black is not a reflection I am sure too,I'm also not saying it is a proof,it could have been broken open and this dime added but doesn't it look like a silver coin ? Also, this is the only pictures I have, the coin set went in the mail and is not here,it was 10 bucks for the set so I don't think it was tampered with, even the reverse looks different than the other coins. You guys know your stuff so what do you think ?

Once you get it in hand, take good quality pictures. The set seems to be untampered with.

Ya I think it looks like it has a chance but if I even think it has a 1% chance when it gets here wouldn't it be better for the grading company to open it for me.

The plastic cases are not airtight, nor waterproof. I picked up some early '70s proof sets that had been long exposed to moisture. Most of the coins were cloudy and heavily spotted.

Hi,me don't get too excited over stuff I buy anymore as I have not found a thing in over a year but this one has got me waiting for it too get here, probably not the real deal the odds are high it isn't but by the picture it has a chance, you guys opinions on the pic help too, maybe you have run across something like this before but I went through the 68's,69's and 70's this week and the 75 Proof sets last week on the internet sites and have been through them all many many times over the years and saw tinted coins but never blackish ones, well wait and see,if anyone knows good or bad about a coin they saw in a proof set this color let me know, thanks.

Quote: Please open the plastic and took the photos. Easier said than done. Sets from that era were sealed. Not air tight, but opening it will damage the holder. Nothing wrong with opening it if you plan to house the coins elsewhere (e.g. an album). Just be aware it is pretty much a one way trip.
