I ran across this nickel while looking for a good inexpensive example of 1941 JN Large-S. The obverse is super smooth on the high points, but the coin itself doesn't have a lot of circulation wear. If you look at the reverse, it has almost complete steps and crisp lettering, so that die isn't correspondingly worn and the coin face itself isn't circulated smooth.

Inspecting the obverse more closely, it seems to have a lot of smearing on the letter tops. The die almost looks over-polished, as if there is no detail in the vertically lower devices. The rim looks like it had issues, and there is raised flash around the rim in the fields.

It isn't out of the question that the SF mint paired an older VLDS obverse die with a fresh reverse die. But I am wondering if this could possibly be an obverse struck through a very late stage die cap?

The details seem weak on the obverse. I am wondering if it's from the die being worn?

the obverse does look soft - maybe it was in somebody's Whitman folder and the reverse was protected from wear.

You should have bought the large S I just sold last week. Pretty much MS65 and only went for $28. The ebay listing coin looks like a mild struck through issue.

I was knocked out in the mid-game. =) I was trawling ebay for a consolation prize.

Yours was a beautiful coin. Die #1 on VV. Crystal clear die gouge marker SW of the date. I'm curious why you didn't grade it and take it to auction yourself. The luster was excellent, the eye appeal was superior to many of the TrueView high grade examples.

It was the lesser of the three of them I had. The other two are at PCGS now but figured I'd toss that one out there for someone to grab a good one without the high cost. Still kind of stunned it didn't get up around the fifty dollar range, but they just don't go high RAW and I was aware of that before putting it up.

The image aroused my curiosity. So I bought it. The low-lying parts of the design show the effects of heavy intentional die abrasion. I'm wondering if someone took a polishing device and attacked the floor of the main recess. That would be quite unusual. I'll let you know what I find out, if anything.

I now have the coin in hand. In addition to heavy intentional die abrasion affecting low-lying parts of the design, I there are several areas of unusual-looking Die Deterioration along the back of Jefferson's neck, his queue, and the base of his bust. I still can't determine whether the indistinct details on the high-relief parts of the bust are due to die abrasion with a smooth buffing tool or whether it is another symptom of Die Deterioration. However, while I've never seen a case of interior design abrasion, I have seen quite a few specimens in which fine details were blunted by die wear. So that would be the most likely explanation. I need to get my hand on some comparison specimens. At any rate, I see no evidence of post-strike tampering or heavy circulation wear.

And here's the image before the listing is lost due to age.
