As a metal detectorist I have had some fantastic finds.. This is is my oldest metallic find. It is a Penannular Ring from about 3,500 years ago! and it was found in Herfordshire in 2006. It was declared treasure and now resides in Hertford Museum in the UK. I realise every day I go out with my detector just how lucky I am to have discovered such a fantastic hobby and share some greats times with my buddies. Clive Image: DSCF0198ba1.jpg50.32 KB

G'Day Clive I have already welcomed you in the introductions though it won't hurt to do it again so to the detecting section of the forum. You are a lucky bloke Clive to have undiscovered detecting areas in the homeland with plenty of opportunity to find that relic so good luck to you mate . I on the other hand I am quite happy to detect the gold fields like the Golden Triangle in Victoria,Between the mate's and myself we do find some nice gold . You will find my thread under Aussie gold finds just down the page a bit . Regards to all. Harry Oh and P.S. Clive don't be frightened to show more of your finds mate,I think every body would like to see what you have found or will find in the future.

Clive, That sure is a nice find. I have mixed emotions about it though. On one hand you found it and it should be yours. On the other hand, the Hertford Museum has added a wonderful relic to it's collection and now all can enjoy it. Keep on swinging mate.

Tim,
That is an age old dilemma, but you know my group have very ethical views on these sort of issues.
The main one is that you respect the owner of the land as it is his property you are finding.
Secondly in the UK the treasure act is there to protect our heritage for all. We have a system to voluntarily record all historical finds over 300 years old. This is operated from the British Museum and is called the Portable Antiquities Scheme. It is mainly aimed for detectorists and contains 65,000 + records. The trouble is the webserver is an old dog and it is frustrating to search. It is being upgraded as we speak.
Finally, I never assume I have a right to keep what I find on other peoples property. The best way to avoid falling out with land owners is to offer to share what you find and that is what I always do.

Nice find! --glad to have you with us! Can't wait to see and hear your stories. The snow has finally melted enough here so I can go out...gonna hit an elementary school for a couple of hours to shake off the dust and get back in the rhythm.

I wish you good luck Dreamstones.
I will of course share some of my stories if you care to read them. My favourite detecting is on freshly planted fields in the early part of the year. We have some coming up soon so I will post some finds for you to see. We have a couple of fine Roman sites which are my favourite to be honest.I love digging up the roman stuff and have just invested in a new detector specially for this sort of site.
Happy hunting!

What a fascinating artifact to have the privilege of finding. Thank you for sharing these pieces of history with us. I'm glad to hear the UK has a system whereby people report their finds to preserve record of past cultures. As one who recently donated items to a museum, there's a reward in knowing more people can enjoy these items besides myself.

Whatever I find, I love to show it off! You should have seen the faces when the Penannular Ring was passed around hand to hand in a marquee at a metal detecting rally. A magic moment where all could share a very rare find.
It gives you a warm feeling to know its gone to a museum close to where it was found.

That's a cool find. I would love to find something like that. But I guess you would have to be around areas that have that kind of stuff. Some are just more fortunate than others. I am one of the others. Great stuff yet to be found.
That's good that it is in a museum. Now everyone can see it.
