I just got this, no clue what I got, any help identifying would be appreciated. Also, any advice on possible value or where to get it appraised, thanks.

Looks like a Severus Alexander sestertius with Sol reverse. Might be cast - hard to tell from the photos.

Cast means the coin was made in a mold by pouring the metal into it. Most Roman coins were hammered rather than cast. If a Roman coin is cast it might be a reproduction, not an original ancient coin.

Most probably a genuine example
although with the bezel it is more a 'curio'

Emperor Severus Alexander
AE Sestertius AD 230
Obv IMP SEV ALEXANDER AVG
laureate bust right
Rv P M TR P VIIII COS III P P
S-C in fields
Sol standing facing head left raising right hand and holding whip
RIC 500

Severus Alexander was brought to Rome and appointed 'Caesar' (AD 222) when it became obvious that his cousin the emperor 'Elagabalus'
(Sextus Varius Avitus Bassianus)
was dangerously unstable
After a failed attempt by the emperors faction to assassinate his cousin 'Alex' the Praetorian Guards made short work of both Elagabalus and his mother Julia Soaemias

They were aided in this by the empress Julia Maesa (grandmother of both Elagabalus and Alex) who willingly 'sacrificed' both daughter Soaemias and grandson Elagabalus in order to maintain a firm hold on power through her younger daughter Mamaea and grandson Alex
The story of the 4 Julia's is really quite complicated and quite confusing
Julia Domna - wife of Septimius and mother of both emperors Caracalla and Geta
Julia Maesa elder sister of Domna
Julia Soaemias daughter of Maesa and mother of Elagabalus
Julia Mamaea younger daughter of Maesa and sister of Soaemias
Confused yet ?
I am .. !

Suffice to say Severus Alexander was a "boy" emperor under the firm control of his 'momma' and some other very powerful people
Which worked just fine
Until things got sticky on the frontiers that is .
Alex and 'mom' et al were assassinated in AD 235 while in Germany and replaced with a military government led by the general Maximinus
A particularly terrifying looking fellow suffering from acromegaly
(a form of giantism)

This coin is a very common type and really not worth going to great lengths to evaluate
Probably worth more as a keepsake
It's a nice thing to keep !
