Can't tell from this photo, the mint mark is on the other side. The 40% silver coins were struck in San Francisco and will have a "S" mintmark.

It's unlikely, but not impossible, that someone broke a 40% half dollar out of a set to encapsulate it.

The keychain is from the Kennedy Center for the Arts so maybe they got the mint to send a bunch for keychains, just a guess I have no idea.

If it is silver,It would have to have a S mint mark on the obverse.

I could go with a 40% silver on this one

I see no trace of copper on the rim so will assume it's 40%. If there's an S on the obverse, that will confirm it.

It looks like a plated clad coin to me.

Also worth remembering: the San Francisco mint produced three Kennedy half dollars for the bicentennial celebration: a cupronickel clad proof, a 40% silver clad proof, and a 40% silver business strike. None of them are particularly expensive. You can buy a 40% silver proof or 40% silver business strike (with a more matte finish) for about five bucks.

If it's 40% silver, it has a melt value of $3.40. If its not yours already, you'll pay more in shipping than its worth. And probably not worth the time and effort to extricate from the acrylic.
Inordinately fascinated by bits of metal with strange markings and figures

Quote: ...probably not worth the time and effort to extricate from the acrylic. I agree. Plenty of raw silver clad Kennedy half dollars out there to buy, so leave this to someone who will appreciate it for what it is (a fancy fob).
