Hello everyone!

Well, well .. today I found some more coins from the States that sat in an album for a good 25 years.

I think we need some Coin CSI here.. what happened?!

I present you victim #1 :

Coin-Csi---What-Happened-Here?-Indian-Cents,-1887-And-1882 Coin-Csi---What-Happened-Here?-Indian-Cents,-1887-And-1882

..and victim #2 :

Coin-Csi---What-Happened-Here?-Indian-Cents,-1887-And-1882 Coin-Csi---What-Happened-Here?-Indian-Cents,-1887-And-1882

Do you think we are looking at possible PVC damage from the old album flip pages? Or just rust and/or bad environment?
It was actually me who put them there 25 years ago but I have no recollection of their conditions back then..

#1 is actually fairly sharp, what a pity. That's Verdigris right?
#2 is more of a cold case at this point.. rust?

How would you approach conserving these two? At least now I have two practice coins for trying out various techniques..

Thanks to all and have a nice weekend!

Environmental damage, probably wet damp conditions for a long time.

Lots of environmental damage. Looks like they were in the ground before being found or stored where there was high humidity/moisture. Yes the green stuff is verdigris, if it's active, soft powdery, it could continue to eat at the coin and destroy it. You could use the search line here on CCF, type in something like how to clean copper/bronze coins, how to stop verdigris, you'll get topics and info about it. Some use lemon juice, olive oil, etc. I use a product called Verdicare to help preserve copper/bronze coins.

Check your other coins to see if they have any verdigris, consider storing your coins with less humidity, use desiccant products or a dehumidifier.

Agree that this looks to have been buried for awhile resulting in pitting and corrosion.
