Over the past couple weeks, I have started to assemble a little collection of 1941-S Jefferson nickels. Specifically, the uncommon FS-501 mint mark variety with the Trumpet Tail Large-S mint mark. I just find it interesting how those nickels capture a tiny little slice of World War II history for the U.S. Mint.

My intention is to match these nickels to the 16 specific dies that are documented on Variety Vista.

Presented are 8 reverses from my collection. The first coin is one I found in circulation when I was learning how to hunt varieties in coin rolls. The remainder are ebay purchases.

That's an interesting variety.
Congrats on your pursuit and thanks for sharing.
16 different dies are discernable by the MM placement I would guess.

BTW-I want to thank you for your nickel threads. I focus so heavily on Lincoln cents, it's nice to see some interesting threads on other denominations.
Words of encouragement are one of the major food groups.
We need to consume them regularly to thrive and grow.

@Pete and Tacc: Glad you enjoy the nickel stuff. =) I know a lot of folks have a real affinity for Lincoln cents, so we see a lot of those. I don't really have the hobby budget to get serious about any silver denominations. I just really like nickels, especially for CRH.

@Silviosi: I am still kicking myself for blowing it on the MS 501 auctioned by Tropicalbats. I wasn't online when the auction finished, and I missed a great coin. Especially disappointed because it was very clearly attributable to a specific die from the 16 known. I also got knocked out of the bidding on an NGC MS66 that was not attributed on the slab, but was clearly a Large S. Other collectors obviously spotted that, too, because it went for way more than would be reasonable for a normal MS66 slabbed nickel.

@everybody: thanks for the kind words, and for humoring my little niche nickel projects. =)

Just to comment on something above. I don't think that mint mark position is the only identifier for the Large-S punch in 1941. There appear to be at least 2-3 different S punches in play with significantly different shapes. One has a super thin and long bottom, angular triangular tail, and thick middle. Another has a much more traditional Trumpet Tail shape. A third has a super thin bottom, middle thickness middle, and normal serif.

Whether that is a result of different punches, a different punching angle, or damage is open to question.
