There is a severe lack of software available to World Coin Enthusiasts, for catalogueing their collections.
Because of this several of us are working on our own software.
The windows application is being worked on as we speak and I don't mind saying it looks as good as any proprietary program.
However. Because there are literally thousands of World Coins (including US ones!) we need some help.
The software will come with basic information about each and every coin pre-completed.
Several of you have already volunteered and we thank you for that, but we could really do with more help.
The initial plan is to cover the period from 1901 and include all circulating (including commemorative) and bullion coins since then.
What we need is people who are able and prepared to do some data entry of coin information.
This will involve entering 20 pieces of information about each coin, such as weight, composition, year etc. into a spreadsheet.
The reward is a cracking piece of software, free of charge!
If you feel you can spare even a small amount of your time per week to devote to this endeavour please PM me with your email address for further details.
I thank you all in advance.

This is a great undertaking. I am in the process of moving, but would like to contribute data entry when I'm settled (hopefully some time in May), if that works.

Quote: Because there are literally thousands of World Coins (including US ones!) we need some help. Are we talking about entering specific years and mintages too? If so--not to discourage anybody, but have you estimated the total time involved, and what that means to the individual? And what would be the cost/benefit over simply buying the Krause electronic versions? Would photos be included too? --just honest questions, not a critique of your idea. Good luck!

DVCollector,
Yes we know how many coins are involved, hence the call to arms. And yes we are looking at each Year, variety and mintage.
In answer to the second part of your post. As above, this is a software program to catalogue your collection, not just a resource for information, as there would be no point in simply duplicating the work of messieurs Krause and Mishler, as you so rightly state.
This will be a resource, that can be browsed for information. But the catalogueing aspect is the most important. There are lots of software programs available for US only, coin collectors. But precious few that are any good for World coins. It will not include stock photos of coins, but you will be able to enter pics of your own collection.
So....are you in?

I would volunteer, but unless the software can be universal (run on a Mac and in Linux as well as Windows) my contributions would be useless, as anything I'd use would be on an OS 10.x Mac.

Hi pls,
At this stage only Windows is planned. I personally know nothing about what is involved to adapt it's use for Mac or Linux. If that changes I will be sure to let you know.

I'm no computer expert, either. Perhaps if the basis for the software was Java or an available application like Excel, which runs on both Macs and Windows with no extra conversion needed, not much additional work would be required to allow the software run on diverse platforms.

This will hopefully be a proper piece of software, not just a spreadsheet or database type thing, so I think it would need a program to run on Mac.
However, you could still help if you would like a copy of all the pre-filled info on Excel once it is complete!
How does that sound?

To all our volunteers.
Everything is ready to come out to you. Schmidty is going to give it one more look over to check for glaring errors and I hope to distribute tomorrow sometime.
Which means you can get those fingers typing this weekend, if you have some free time!
Any other volunteers are more than welcome, there is room for everyone.
Please PM me if you can spare some time for data entry.
Thank You Lee

I probably could do some data entry for you during odd down times on my PC at work, QuickSilver, Excel version or not. Let me know.
