This is an old peso (as in, worth 1/1000 new peso)

However, it is .100 fine silver (almost nothing) and has... 1.6gr silver? I think...

It's 1.6gr (GO, 16gr is about half an ounce!)

16g, 0.10 Silver, 0.0514 ASW

I don't really see the point of even having that little amount of silver in any coin.

Listed in Krause as $1.25 in VF condition...which is more then melt

Think of it as a .900 copper bullion coin

As a side note, coins with a silver content of less than .500 fineness are known as billon alloy coins
Rest in Peace

I just bought a '64 example of one of these copper coins (oops, silvery-copper) yesterday for a couple of bucks.

I love Mexican coins minted between 1943-1992 or so. The 20-centavo coin is my absolute favorite, although the monstrous 50-centavo piece is nice, too.

Before reform coinage in '92, for a few years Mexican coins were minted in an obscene amount of pesos. However, being large they also provided almost unlimited opportunities for artwork depicting scenes from Mexico's Aztec, Toltec, and other native cultures for some of the most interesting, historic, and beautiful coinage from any country.

I have one of those and I agree that if you make a silver coin at least should have 50 % silver.
