Looks like there may be some dried 'crud' on the coin. Suggest a long soak in 100% acetone, then re-evaluate.

I agree as well. An acetone soak and rinse should reveal the truth.

I'm not arguing just curious. Why acetone? Everything I read says don't clean them. I'm generally curious.

Acetone will remove gunk without hurting the coin surface.
Cleaning that harms the surface is what is discouraged. Examples are scrubbing and using acid based cleaners.

Thank you for explaining that. That makes sense. I will get some acetone and get back to you all in the next 24 hours.

Quote: Thank you for explaining that. That makes sense. My pleasure. Quote: I will get some acetone and get back to you all in the next 24 hours. Please use 100% pure acetone, best sourced from a hardware store. Nail polish remover has additives that may be counterproductive. Remember to rinse with fresh acetone after letting it soak. Otherwise, whatever is removed will dissolve into the acetone and then redeposit on the coin as it evaporates. No need to rinse with water; fresh acetone does a better job. It dries fast, so no need to wipe dry.

This coin looks like it has been through a fire.

Just a spender, not worth the time to work on it. Seriously.

As I posted earlier, it's been through a fire. That is slag, it forms on the surface of the coin from the impurities in the copper.
