A recent pick-up, 1848 Seated dime.

I collect early dimes, bust and seated, and this one appealed to me in spite of the less-than-optimal seller pictures. I was unsure as to what the actual condition in-hand would be.

The top picture is what the seller posted, the others are my own.

The coin has nice luster and really pretty blue tones. I tried to capture the luster, but only partially succeeded.

How would you grade this coin?

My very amateur opinion would be AU50. Very nice pickup!

I agree with AU50. Looks well struck. Scratch across liberty's shins detracts a little.

The strike doesn't look strong enough to be a proof, especially the hair detail. If it were a proof it would be a major score since the proof mintage for 1848 dimes is only 10 Still at AU-50, it is a $300+ coin.

I'll say AU-50 as well, 53 would not surprise.

i'd call it AU53

your first in hand of the obv looks like a scratch across the legs. the other photos don't show that so I'm not sure how to assess that. maybe you can enlighten me on what you see in hand.

out of all the coins you have posted over the years I know you are a very conservative grader when it comes to your coins. I'm betting you probably called this one XF45

A most impressive strike. I would be at AU53.

Thank you, everybody, for your grading opinions.
Certainly higher grades than the EF I had originally thought based on the sellers pictures.

@panzaldi, the mark or light hairline scratch as far as I can see diagonally across the lower gown, is certainly there, and it is more or less visible depending on how you tilt the coin when viewing.
