So I was looking around at some braided hair large cents and came across this 1850. Looks like low AU to me - 53 maybe? Cheek is a bit beat up, but not a bad looking coin overall with a sharp strike. It's unusual in my limited experience to see detail in every star on the obverse, even with MS examples. I started trying to figure out a die variety and noticed the doubling on the reverse. Mostly noticeable on TED and STA. BTW, seller does not mention this. This looks like Machine Doubling to me, but I'm not sure. None of the die varieties mentions any doubling. Never could figure out the die variety. Best I could do with seller's pics - I don't own this coin. Thoughts? Edited by Blastenpene4 01/28/2024 9:36 pm

Not sure if Longacre doubling happens on Braided hair cents - I think of it more on Indians. I could certainly be wrong on that, but I've not seen it on large cents.

i agree with mid AU. AU53 sounds right due to the dullness of the coin. could be the lighting. I'm a little concerned with the jawline hits. this is a key area and the one hit is fairly deep. could it details the coin? I'm not sure, tough call

AU50. Reverse die has extensive recutting; I'll have to check the books when I get home to see if that matches any known die pair characteristics.

Recutting is when the letters on the die (legend, etc) were "recut" into the die to make them sharper, often seen on the serifs or uprights.

I went through all the die varieties and couldn't find any that mentioned reverse doubling or repunching. I'm still not convinced it's not some sort of Machine Doubling, but I've looked at a lot of braided hair cents and only know of the reverse doubled die on the 1849, which I have.

I could be wrong, but I'm judging based off the blown up photo.

just for my own knowledge. I believe is cutting at least across the tops of all the letters in UNITED blowup as an example. do you see that also?

I see something above and to the left of STA as well. I can't find any mention of this anywhere. I made the seller an offer, curious to see this coin in hand. Will report if he accepts.
