Can someone possibly help me identify what's wrong with the year or what happened or how this could happen?

You've got zinc rot on this 2000 cent. Also, welcome to CCF!

Zinc rot can happen anywhere on the coin, not just the date. A pinhole in the copper plating allows water and air to attack the underlying zinc core, which corrodes and expands, pushing the copper up into a roundish "blister" or "bubble". The blister might burst (as it has here), revealing zinc dust in the centre, or it might stay unbroken, looking like a "lump" on the coin's surface. A zinc rot bubble around the date or inscriptions can look like an "O" or other odd lettering. A zinc rot bubble around the mintmark can make the mintmark look like some kind of RPM. And a zinc rot bubble on the design can look like some kind of weird die chip. But they're all zinc rot bubbles - PMD and not mint errors.

Thanks Mr.Sap, it does have a "pin hole" in front of the head. I have 1986 penny that has two raised dots, doesn't look like a pin hole, looks like weld bubbles, the best I can explain. I will research zinc rot. Thanks for the helpful information.

Mnchild, Your 2000 cent has zinc rot issues as stated. Your 1986 sounds like trapped gas bubbles between the copper plating and zinc core. Please find a better way of taking coin photos, the better the pics you post the better we can help you. John1
