Hello! I just upgraded my Mexican 8 reales coin to this one here--this one sadly does not seem to have luster, but does have some nice darker coloring. NGC straight graded it--what do you think they gave it?

Also, does anyone know a reputable price guide for these? Or a place to find more information about populations (not PCGS or NGC--their population reports only cover the tiny fraction of these coins that they have actually slabbed) and rarity of these pieces?

Can't comment on grade but I like this coin. Congrats! How much did it cost?

@MisterT--$850, but I traded in my 1749 Mexian 8 Reales in a PCGS EF(40) holder to offset most of this price. I love the globes in the design especially, and I eventually want to get one of each denomination (of this particular design) where the details in the globe are as clear as possible. If you scroll down in this forum you can see a post I made over a year ago featuring a 1748 Mexican 4 Reales coin I picked up with original mint luster, and the best surface I've ever seen on any of these coins (granted, I haven't seen many, especially of the 4 Reales denomination), but with just a bit of wear on top of a weak strike. That one is an NGC AU(55) holder, although the verdict in this forum is that it may be a bit overgraded (it's gotta be the mint luster on both sides, which didn't come out as strongly in the photos as appears on the actual coin).

I would like to learn more about this series, though--so if you have any leads I'm all ears. Thanks for the comment!

A spot on guess! Well done! This coin is a bit dark, and I wonder if it wasn't cleaned at some point, but I have no doubt it's better than the vast majority of survivors from this area, given that it wasn't buried in the Earth or submerged in the sea for hundreds of years.
