My dad gave me these in 1994 when I was home on leave. I think he knew his time was about up and just wanted to simplify his life. These were coins my mom never knew about. He was a WWII era Marine and didn't get married until 1957 (after he retired from the Marines) when he was already 42 and I didn't come along until 1960. Mom was considerably younger than he was, but that never seemed to bother him much :)

He'd kept these coins along with a couple more in a bible, pretty simple...

One is a pretty worn (cabinet rub, LOL) 1898-s double eagle and an 1881-s eagle. Oh what you could buy with $30 dollars back in the 10's and 20's. My grandfather apparently sold 20 acres of land and received these...

Take Care
Ben

WEll that sounds like a going rate- 30.00 for 20 acres of land. My parents in 1931 purchased a 160 acre farm in South eastern Okla for $600.00 but that included the house, barn and some farm implements including a cow and a pair of mules. Looks like about the same rate of exchange that you mention- yet, the deal of my folks happened during the great depression.

Property values vary considerably even now. Our house and little farm up here in South Dakota cost us $350 an acre back in 86. Today you can double that now.

The property we've still got, just over 4 acres is adjacent to this little strip grandpa sold down in East Texas near Nacogdoches, Appleby actually. I guess the land was needed for the public and he got the going price at the time. But we still own the mineral rights which are funny things and the topic of a whole other post. Mom's place (The Farm) is over in Leon county, my dad paid $26.00 an acre for it after the Korean Conflict. He bought a unit, which is 660 acres. We still have 400 of that today.

Another thing I've always heard and still try to adhere to today is "Never take out an old fence..."

Oh, I'd say VF-20 for the $20 and AU-50 for the $10.

Condition is one thing, value another. I'd say those are two priceless coins.

1,000,000 an acre here in St. Petersburg. However, that's because there is no longer any land. I am not even sure if 350$ can buy my a sq/ft of housing now in Florida
