inherited my late fathers coin collection a while ago, and began going through it recently. Nothing too insane, a few Morgans, Peace dollars, a 1915s Barber Half, some Merc Dimes, Wheaties, Etc., the usual suspects. I was instantly hooked after doing a bit of research! Started Roll hunting about 2 weeks ago, various denominations. All told maybe 40 rolls of pennies, 40 rolls of nickels, 20 rolls of dimes, 5 rolls of half dollars. Really just dipping my toes in and seeing whats for me. I got my first big fish today though, a 1944-D War Nickel! I was beaming! I think I'll be around here more often, so its very good to meet you all! I hope you'll be patient with me if I have any questions or ask for advice.

to the CCF, Waltick90! Congratulations on your nice find, and I hope they keep coming. How about a picture?
Inordinately fascinated by bits of metal with strange markings and figures

Waltick90,

Looks like you need to work on your photos a bit. A little blurry and a bit dark. What are you using to take photos with?
The area from the edge to his neck looks kinda like a lamination?Or maybe just a stain? The better the pics you post the better we can help you.

Agreed, all I had available was my phone camera unfortunately. Probably also doesn't help that it was in a 2x2. Though I am looking into getting a scope. Hopefully future photos turn out better.

It appears to be some kind of stain or scrape mark, there's nothing adhering to it nor is it dented.

Thanks for the tips and looking out for me!

Always remove coins from holders before taking pics when possible.
If/when you get a scope, make sure to use a memory card in it and not take a photo of the screen and post it.

to the Community Waltic90 ! ... War Nickles were one of my favorites (still are) as a kid (50's-60's) I often found them in change...I always liked the great, big mintmarks, & the different "feel" & look of the silver-nickle composite ... they'll be a fine start for you, as they are still available at decent prices in decent condition ... War Pennies are a nice compliment, BTW... enjoy the "hunt" ...John from Tennessee...

I like the War Nickels, very unusual to see them in pocket change so nice catch. Circulated War Nickels appear much darker and grayer in color than regular nickels. Some of these silver nickels also have a fairly streaky toning pattern — caused by the particular metallic composition and how it reacts to the effects of heat, perspiration, and other environmental factors. The color difference on uncirculated versions of the copper-nickel and 35% silver nickels is flipped — Mint State silver nickels usually appear much whiter in color than the copper-nickel specimens do. Heres some info to learn about grading and the War Nickels (1942 to start) https://www.coinstudy.com/1942-nickel-value.html and https://coins.thefuntimesguide.com/...ickel-value/

Yes some use the Red Book or even free online price guides to get some general knowledge of what coins might have some value https://m.numismedia.com/rarecoinprices.htm but then since many of the non high condition coins are typically not found in pocket change, some start to learn about varieties and error coins as those can be found in pocket change. A book called strike it rich with pocket change 5th edition can help you get started, and then free websites plus forums like this one can expand on that.
