This is the 2nd penny I have come across where the planchet appears to have been dinged before plating and striking. The 1st was in a different location and I wasn't able to get a decent picture. The design elements should be crushed if this were PMD. The obverse of the coin is normal. Has anyone seen this before? This is a 2020 LSC. I believe the other I have is a 2022. *** Edited by Staff to Add Year / Mintmark / Denomination to Title. It's very important to have in the title. ***Edited by Seeker_101 03/05/2024 11:33 pm

Seeker_101, please post full pics (oriented correctly) of the obverse and reverse.
Inordinately fascinated by bits of metal with strange markings and figures

A full obverse and reverse picture would be helpful.
Errers and Varietys.

Forgive me if these aren't great. I took them quickly and its a 2021, not 2020. The ding is from the shield to the "N I" in UNITED.

In the first photo, I see an arial view of a grown over village in Brazil. Seriously.. I don't see much of anything in the three photos provided. Lots of verdigris and maybe some PMD

In the very first photo, that oval shape is sunken in. Yes it as verdigris on it. Id it was PMD, there is no way the outline of the shield would still be there. Also, part of the N and I would flattened. Instead they follow down into the dent. No way it could be PMD. I outlined the top of the indent on the coin in blue on these images. They are taken at an angle as well.

can you pull out a tiny bit on the close ups? you are zoomed in a bit too much to get a full understanding of what you have. Remember, you have the coin in hand, we don't

That's a puzzler. If it were PMD, the devices would probably be crushed. But if it was a planchet problem, then how did the devices get fully struck? It's almost like the coin was struck, and then that oval area sank. Looking forward to the pro opinions on this one. Edit: noticed on the obverse, there seems to be something going on in the area directly opposite the feature. Maybe the coin was pinched or dented?

You've got a good eye Brand. I went back to look at that area after your post. There does seem to be a little indentation and some PMD (or all PMD) as well on the obverse side. Those markings are to the north of the indentation on the reverse as if they were staggered. Here is that area of the obverse. The other penny I have with an indent in it is not as uniform as this one and I've questioned whether the zinc rotted somehow beneath the copper. Other coin (2013):

All I'm seeing on this coin is zinc rot and crud from being what we call a cup holder coin.
