I had to clean this coin to even see the date.Because I knew it was ruined anyway, I decided to go full throttle. I soaked, rubbed, scrubbed with several different things and nothing much changed. What could be the cause of this finish, fire?

Could be a metal detecting find possibly. Environmental damage.

The finish is surprisingly smooth to the touch...even before the cleaning. Puzzling.
