I went ahead and bought this one online. The photos on the website did not represent any luster--in person it certainly has some luster, but I am skeptical to call it mint luster, as it is from 1623, and I'm assuming that the technology did not yield the same type of luster we have seen on more modern coins, and it lacks "frost." I am wondering if it a result of cleaning--the seller said he believes this was cleaned. I don't see any "grain" on the surface that comes from excessive wiping, nor does it look so dull in person. Any chance you think this one straight grades? It's quite pretty in person--I tried to capture the way it looks rotated in these images, rather than simply show the best angle. I will include the seller's photos and my own photos from yesterday.

It is a medal. My advice is to forget about those grading things. They know little about medals. Very old medals have been cleaned. They were presentation objects, to be displayed. Silver oxidizes, gets cleaned.

A small fraction of issued ancient coins are really uncleaned as the graders say and mint state. Those that happened to be hidden as soon as they were produced. And forgotten. That could happen, people put away money as treasure. That kind of thing did not happen to ancient medals. Some very few have been in very well kept cabinets. Very, very few. Trying to grade old medals, some almost unique and compared to what, is futile.

Yours medal is french. Hard to be sure it was really an 1623 strike. The french were especially tricky with medals. Research that one medal for possible restrikes.

I saw this really is classified as jeton. Unusual in silver. Doubt it was used as counter. In good shape for a jeton. Enjoy it outside a box.

Thanks for your input! This is my third jeton. I submitted the other two just to have them authenticated and kept safe in a slab. These jetons are paper thin. The two I have are dated 1584 (King's council) and 1620 (for another institution, I think related to science). Their designs are stunning, though. I tried to look up whether or not they were actually minted in the date that appears on them, but in terms of the two I already have, I've found nothing on them.

It's a beauty, high end AU. Possibly cleaned at some point. 50/50 chance of a TPG straight grade.
