Hello, I need a little bit of help identifying if this is a true double die or just Machine Doubling. Thanks

*** Edited by Staff to Add Year / Mintmark / Denomination to Title. It's very important to have in the title. ***

I agree with split copper plating, no added value.

The correct numismatic term is doubled die - it is the die that would have had doubled elements during production.

All coins are struck with double dies - an obverse and a reverse die.

Mechanical or Machine Doubling (MD) occurs when the planchet shifts a tiny bit during striking. It's sometimes called Strike Doubling. It's not considered an error, just an artifact of the production processing.

Modern cents (since mid-year 1982) are made of copper plated zinc. During the strike, the copper plating can split, causing "split plating doubling". Also, it's not an error, another artifact.

The other one you will see is Die Deterioration Doubling. As coins are struck, not only does the die change the shape of the planchet, but there are more limited effects to the die too. This is also why the design elements move outwards to the rim (and why L on the rim is not an error).
