Loved the obverse of this coin and at $25.00 what could go wrong? This example has an intresting story.

Great buy for $25. This one looks VF-35 to me.

All the dimes and quarters were either $10.00 or $25.00 were polished smoothed or cleaned many years back. The only 2 that looked original were the 18 D and this one The reverse had a good amount of black Whitman dust caked on it and that can be OK sometimes so took a chance. An overnight acetone soak revealed a different coin, the reverse hairline marks look like typical pocket jostling...I think this one would straight grade but you never know? I've handled some SLQ's detailed as cleaned and scratched my head thinking "looks original to me". I had it at XF until I got it home and really looked at that sheild and right thigh I'm at VF+ also.

Here's a PCGS graded XF I paid a premium on for comparison. Big difference and quite a bar to jump from VF to XF.

I think this is an XF coin, but the hairlines are very distracting, so I'm going to lean towards it having been cleaned at some point. The full date is a nice thing to have; I've seen plenty of VF-XF coins that don't have full dates.

Those abrasions are exaggerated by Android shots and there is some luster tucked away within some of the devices thats a positive. I've been wrong before and agree it could be a toss up for reverse detailing. I have a slowly growing number of Type II Phillys that appear as original and plan on adding the best ones for an ANACS submission soon with a roll of better date Barbers Halfs. Will add this one and follow up with results. Thanks for opionions.
