Could use a bit of help on this Shield, picked this up at a Thrift store and opened up a can of worms I know nothing about (shields). Some mild concern of it being a counterfeit, specs are accurate but the coin just seems off (4.98 on weight, 20.4 diameter). Die cracks all over it, missing S in TRUST, apparent Cuds, and solid rim somewhat reduce counterfeit concerns.

I've been through the Peters and Mohon bible and can't seem to find a definitive match. I know the mint had serious alloy issues with the shields but a close up of the surface shows more texture than I am comfortable with.

ED that was whizzed away possibly? Any thoughts appreciated from any resident shield experts.

PS - think I just answered my own question. Last pic shows indicator of whizzing on bottom of devices.

First picture makes the date look crooked but the close up of the date looks ok with a die crack. The PCGS site shows 33 varieties for this date. scroll down the page a little to see related varieties.

MisterT - the Peter's Shield book shows 40++ varieties for the 68, a good portion have the slanted date. None match the die cracks on this one. I'll have a peek at the PCGS listings tho - better chance of matching a pic.
