The post that stands out on the obverse die forming the open center of the D had broken off before this coin was struck. Even though it looks like extra metal, it is just part of the planchet, the metal was just forced into the hole in the die by the pressure of the strike.

This coin and every coin struck after it using the same die will have the same filled D. Depending on when the post broke off of the die in the die's working life means many thousands of 1979-D cents could have the same anomaly. It's common to see this and doesn't add any premium value to the coin.
