Hi, I'm coming across a few wheat pennies that have various, beautiful tones to it like varnish like as dark wooden table like or a very dark chocolate brown or black in some cases. I have a hard time capturing the colors on the other coins so will wait for the moment. Just wondering of those coins could interest a collector or not as well. Marlies

Looks like a so called "woodie" There are collectors for these. The more it looks like wood grain the better. John1

Woodies are popular with some collectors.

It's caused by improper mixture of the alloys.

Toning cannot constitute an error or a variety.

So I guess "Woodies" and other unique "natural" tonings would be considered in a "special interest " category?

"Woodies" are not in the same designation as "Toned" coins.

OK-it seems like toned coins are then just the ones that are done as experiments post mint?
Thanks for the link and taking the time to find it for me-very informative!

Quote: ones that are done as experiments post mint? Not sure if I understand that? "Woodies" are created from improper mixing of the alloy metals - 95% copper with 5% Tin/Zinc.

Agreed - that is a 'woodie' cent and not an error or variety.

A woody is technically an "error" in mixing the alloys. John1
