I'm going to burn some time and try to get the hang of figuring out what VAMS I have.

I am/was thinking this one is a 1878S short nock VAM 1-C.
It matches everything just fine. Obverse and Reverse.

But I have questions.
I'll ask just a couple. (for now).

If my coin has more issues to point out other than the 1-C has.
Is it still classified as 1-C or what?

Inside and to the right of the curl it's different looking and with die scratches.
Under the eagles neck there's a gouge.
There's numerous die scratches around the tip of wing plus this has something at the end of the feather.
Arrow tip looks like maybe split or?

Am I reading more in to it and should just leave it as 1-C.

Have you checked the markers for VAM-23? as they appears to have the same gouge on the eagles neck. But your Morgan does not appear to have the rusted Die Marker? http://www.vamworld.com/wiki/1879-S_VAM-23 and If it does not have the rusted dots on the eagle then I'd say you should call it a 1c.

You are reading the Markers about as much as you can. if you look for any smaller markers you'll end up on a wild goose chase.

Thanks johnhenry.

Could it be just a later stage, not given a different number?

I would say leave it as the VAM-1C as the other markers don't appear to be noticeable for them to be listed. But it does appear to be a slightly later stage from the photo, just not a enough of a difference for a listing. Hopefully this was helpful
