Hi all, I recently purchased a kilo of world coins and was going through them on the weekend when I came across a coin that I had never seen before.

On one side it has a T-Rex and on the other side it has 190 million years ago-Jurassic period dinosaurs-collectors coin.

I did a search for it and the only thing I found was a listing on ebay for $150 that said it was from Australia and 1oz silver, which isn't likely as it only weighs 26.6 grams.

Here is the coin in question

And that's the only one that matches with Google Lens.

It seems like it might be a knockoff or base metal strike of this T Rex bullion coin by the Collectors Mint in California.

Maybe something sold in the gift shop at a Natural History Museum?

Thank you for the information very much appreciated.

The ebay listing that John1 posted was the one I saw as well.

It is interesting if it really is worth $150 or that it is 1oz silver, as it was part of a kilo pack of world coins that I only paid $40 Australian for.

There is also quite a few interesting world coins in it, which I will post soon once I have catalogued them and put them in cases.

So I might have actually scored well on this purchase, which is a nice.

Dinosaurs are very popular. I would not be surprised to hear about people collecting dinosaur commemoratives from all over the world.

But do not believe in prices people ask for in ebay and other places like that. People can ask what they fancy.

It doesn't say it's silver, unlike the ones posted by Brandmeister, so it almost certainly isn't.

I don't think so. A natural history museum worth their salt would not want to encourage or perpetuate the myth that T. Rex was a "Jurassic" dinosaur. T. Rex was a Cretaceous Period dinosaur, 73-66 million years ago, not 190 million, and actual palaeontologists have always known this.

Given this casually incorrect use of the word "Jurassic", I can only assume it dates from the time of release of that creator and perpetrator of this incorrectness, the movie Jurassic Park. So, 1993 or shortly afterwards.

bryan10au,
Your coin does not look like it is silver, but you could try the tissue test.

Thank you for the tip John1 much appreciated, I tested it and it's not silver. So still not really sure what it is or where it came from but I don't mind as I like it and that's all that really matters.

Yes seems to be a base metal knock-off of that silver round. Interestingly, they even included the letter "B" stamp on the T-Rex's lower left side.
