The verdigris in center of the die chip makes it say LOBERTY :)

You might be right. It may no have been a die chip but a plating bubble that that opened to rot. That actually makes more sense to me.

Not a chip,it is either a burst bubble or trapped debris.I think it is hard debris.It's also a small date.Just to be sure it is zinc,weight?
