Just won this coin at the recent Elsen auction, not yet in hand.

Archbishopric of Trier, Poppo of Babenberg (reigned 1016-1047), denar after 1035, Dannenberg 468.

A very unusual coin in this genre (saints' images) because Simeon, who was a monk/recluse, died in Trier in 1035, and the process for his canonization was started immediately, culminating in his sainthood in 1042. So, the coin was struck during the process of sainthood, or just after (Elsen dates the coin to 1035-1041; certainly the latest possible date would have been 1047).
His bust is shown in front of the old Roman gate, the Porta Nigra, where he lived his last 5 years in a hermit's cell.

Not really.

I wonder if it could have been a shorthand for A(RCHEPISCOPATUS TREVIRENSIS) where the gate fills in the second word because it would have been so well known to stand for Trier? Having read Name of the Rose a few times, I have an appreciation for the capability of medieval clerics doing word games

The full obverse legend is supposed to be POPPO EPS, though I am not seeing that unless it has been contracted to POPPO PS.
