The coin is an Ottoman 1 Para AH1171 regnal year 2
For the purpose of converting to years A.D.
I assume that AH1171 is regnal year 1 and regnal year 2 is 1172, so the conversion would be 1759A.D.
Am I on the right track?

As always, many thanks in advance.

Yes, but AH 1172 is September 4 1758-August 24 1759, so unfortunately not a one to one correspondence with AD years,

Thanks oriole, yes, understood. My calendar converter is one day different to yours, but that is just splitting hairs. My query was more to do with the regnal year 1 starting at the ascension of the ruler, and not at the end of the first year in power, and your answer covers that as well.
This is to do with How Far Back Can We Go Sixth Edition
trying to decide which AH coin can be used with an AD year. The greater AD exposure to an AH year decides the split.

Cheers

To answer the OP's question directly: yes, the accession year denoted on Ottoman and similar coins is "Year 1", not "Year zero". So the maths, to calculate the actual AH issue date for such coins, is Accession date + Regnal year - 1. You then need to run that resultant year through whatever AH-to-AD date converter you're using.

As for applicability to the HFBCWG6 thread, I don't think it's all that applicable; the current target year is 1410, and I don't think too many Islamic states were doing the regnal-year-accession-date thing that early - most were just putting the date of issue. The accession-regnal system didn't become popular until the Mughal/Ottoman period.

Thanks Sap
Yes I get what you are saying. Lets say it may become applicable for HFBCWG8, when we do hit a dead end in the Sixth and then the Seventh Edition.
