Hi all, Just recently acquired this 1817 bust half and to my eye it looks like it has a strike through.....or is it a scratch? The reason it looks like a strike through to me is that there is no raised metal on either side or end that you usually would see in a scratch of this size. This indicates that is was an object on the die that left an impression on the coin. Anyone have thoughts?

It could be. I'm not seeing any displaced metal.

Wear would have flattened the displaced metal.
I am leaning towards a strike through.

NGC said it was a scratch , but I think they are wrong and you fine folks are correct. I have sent it in to ANACS as an error, so we will see what they say. Fingers crossed!

Can we get a reverse photo? I don't think it is a scratch but it could be some kind of punch. The fields look slightly warped in that area which wouldn't appear on a strikethrough. Can't tell for sure, but reverse photos would help.
Suffering from bust half fever.
