I was at my local coin shop today looking over his selection of 1858 LL slab coins. I found the following displayed coin in an NGC slab. At first I could not believe my eyes when I spotted the Overdate. I quickly looked over the remaining slabs and purchased this slab for $65. So the question I have is why didn't NGC pick up the overdate. All the standard attributes are present. I know PCGS labels their overdates Weak and Strong. Maybe NGC doesn't recognize overdates. At any rate this is my third overdate in the last six weeks. Let me know what you think and if anyone has ever seen this happen with any grading agency.

Excellent score - leave some for the rest of us too.

NGC attributes as FS-301, they also do the LDS version. Send it in to them for re-holder/attribution. NGC will not just slap on an attribution if the submitter did not fill out the line item asking for the attribution. ANNNNDDDD, pay the attribution fee. If blatantly obvious they might contact beforehand but fee still required.

So what is an overdate? Another date over one already punched? Then what was the first date?

Yes that is what an over date is. In this case a 1858/7
The 8 is over the 7

Thanks for the info on how to submit coins for attribution. I was under the impression that you paid a set fee and the grading service identified what you had like an overdate, repunched date, DDO, DDR and so on. So when you submit a coin you pay a separate attribute fee plus grading fee. I am glad to understand that now.
This particular over date 1858/7 was a die that was used for 1857 coins that was updated with an 8 that left the tip of the 7 exposed. Snow talks about die stages A,B and C. As the die was polished the 7 's tip started to fade away and that is how the Weak stage variety was attributed. That is what I have heard, does anyone else have a different understanding?

That's a neat find—apparently worth a few hundred bucks. Good eye gets the reward! =)
