I'm still pretty new to all this world but have been working my way through an inherited coin collection and came across this 1901 Morgan about an hour ago and am intrigued.

I know the 1901 Phillies are not common and this one seems, to my untrained eye, to be in above-average condition. Still, I'm hoping you can talk some sense into me before I go off and pay to get this graded and slabbed.

As a newbie, I'm still learning how to photograph the coins properly so I took several shots in the hopes that the different lighting angles will be helpful.

Thanks in advance for your thoughts on this.

Looks like a low end AU but possibly cleaned.

Much obliged!

What prompted this post were some other results I got back about possible grades for the coin. I've been experimenting with three of OpenAI's GPTs (specially-trained models) and ran the coin through them (twice each) using these and some additional photos. The grades I got back ranged from a low of AU-55 to the majority consensus of MS-63 grades (4 of the 6 grades), and then there was an outlier suggesting a MS-64.

I was thinking if it was an AU-55, then it may be worth getting it looked at officially... but, as I said, this is all still fairly new to me and I was wanting other human eyes on this.

As for the observations about cleaning/polishing, that could well be. Sadly, my dad passed a few years ago and he purchased a majority of these coins in the 80s and early 90s so I have no idea what he was told or knew about the coins.

Thanks again for the quick responses and good insights.

Can you send a picture of the coin Laying Flat so we have the ability too see the coins shiny points would help determine the wear , so Flat but enough of a angle too see above the reeds ( edge of coin ) so a 3 dim look is possible ? If not no worries taking it out and into the air

AI has come a long way but is still light years from being accurate on grading and values.

I would never trust those apps.

first, always take the coin out of the holder. it causes glare and obscures the surfaces.

second, its critical to see better photos of this coin without glare as this coin in AU would have sufficient value to slab it.

third, based on these photos the coin appears to have been polished. a big indicator that this occurred is the high points of the devices appear melted which I'm seeing here especially the obv. this could be photo related though and thats why its important to remove the coin

without better photos i'd call it AU details (cleaned/polished). if the coin was polished it would significantly affect the coins value. if it was just cleaned and not harsh only a small amount

two reasons to slab
1. its a rare coin that needs authenticated and preserved
2. you are planning on selling the coin and the cost of acquisition plus the grading fee's would warrant it without chewing up all your profit

consider grading costs prior to sending in.

PCGS charges a minimum of $69 for a subscription other subscription levels include grading vouchers though so you could reduce these costs. add to the subscription cost, per coin grading cost which I think for this one might be $22, shipping & ins both ways (1-4 coins is $27 if the total value is under $1000)

NGC - economy grading tier is $23, plus $10 handling fee, plus $28 for shipping (1-5 coins).

ANACS grading would be $16 but there's a 5 coin minimum. Shipping would be $29-35.
