I have a 1942 nickel thats I have some questions about, first off I got this nickel back from change at a fast food restaurant, and I noticed the difference in it immediately. First the whole nickel is brown, there is no type of silver on it at all, even the edges are brown, and it weighs 4.8grams. Can anyone tell me what's going on with this? Or is it just really old and worn down?

It's stained from environmental exposure, looks like it spent some time in the ground. No added value from the color.

Otcaig,

I agree with environmental damage. They minted both 35% silver and no silver that year. The ones with silver have a large mint mark above the building.

a environmentally toned coin. I see some long scratches on the obverse that show the nickels silvery color under the toning.
