I'm interested in purchasing a gold coin from a dealer, specifically a 2013 Superman. The coin doesn't come with COA or packaging, just coin in capsule. I'm cautious as I've seen fakes of this particular coin floating around online. Is there a way I can authenticate the coin or test if it's real gold without opening the capsule or damaging it? The seller says validated it with an XRF machine. Is it possible to test the gold of a coin in capsule using a machine like this? Please see picture of the coin attached. Your expertise is appreciated. Edited by Mikesnickname 04/05/2024 12:40 am

Is the dealer reputable? That goes a long way when buying a $1.3K coin. Even COAs and packaging can be copied, so sometimes you're not safe there. Post a pic of both sides of the coin, and maybe someone with a sharp eye can spot something. Quote: validated it with an XRF machine I would ask to see the XRF results. If the dealer doesn't have them, that raises red flags. Good luck!

For the naked eye the reverse looks as original. But will fully agree with this: Quote: I would ask to see the XRF results. If the dealer doesn't have them, that raises red flags. Good luck!

A thick gold plating will fool a cheap XRF.

You have some good ideas. I should ask to see xrf report. But, at the end of the day it can be manipulated.
I guess I have to buy the buyer, not the coin.

Here is the other side of the coin. Maybe an expert can provide some insight.

I incline to believe that the coin is genuine. All fakes looked differently on the Obverse - less sharp, less frosted and more flat.
Pay attention though, to sell this coin as a private seller, will be very hard. The potential buyers will have same authenticity related doubts.

Based on the images, it's legit.
Be careful they don't switcharoo once you're there.

I would be uncomfortable buying this coin coin without original packaging. I could go without the COA which is easily faked by using a good quality printer but the packaging is difficult to reproduced. It is not the standard black/red clamshell that coins come in but in a glossary graphic box. You need the proper machine, the right paper, the right ink, right material, etc. to make the box. Not to mention the sleeve which has to be the exact thickness and shape.
If the box and sleeve is easy to reproduce you would think counterfeiters of the fake 2013 Superman coin would include them with the fake coin. But that is rarely the case as counterfeit Superman coins are usually sold with capsule but no original packaging.
I would never buy an expensive NCLT without original packaging as the chances of it being fake is much stronger.

I agree 100% with MoneyPenney, especially: Quote: I would never buy an expensive NCLT without original packaging as the chances of it being fake is much stronger. Many times I have not purchased a needed/missing expensive NCLT due to the coin being offered only in an airtite, no COA nor original packaging.

Agree. NCLT needs the original package and COA to sell well on ebay. Even the price will not be as high as the issue price most of the time. But without the original package and COA, it's very hard to resell it. I won't buy any NCLT coins from ebay without the original package and COA.

please compare to this one: https://www.ebay.ca/itm/11593130593...9SR-if4qPgYwcheck the DC signature. also the print on the 'superman', the one you show looks like a counterfeit ('DC' looks like 'OC' in your image, but in the one shows in the link, it is very clear a DC
