I have 2 Morgan dollars that I would appreciate your grading opinions on. The first is a 1878. Any chance it qualifies for MS? Noteanything special about it? The 2nd one is a 1879s. Pics are taken through coin holder plastic. Thanks.

They are nice coins but not high enough grade to be worth the cost of sending them in for grading. Difficult to tell with the photos and under the plastic if they have original surfaces, there are scuffs, scratches, looks like the 1878 has some circulation wear, the 1879 has reed edge bag marks on the cheek. In my opinion the 1878 is AU grade the 1879 is low end MS but I'm no expert.

please post 1 coin per thread, ensure all photos are properly oriented and remove all coins from the holder

the 78 i'd put in the AU55 box

the 79 is either AU58 or MS62. difficult to see the surfaces properly due to shadowing

I agree with the grades provided above. Note that the 1878 is an 8TF coin - that will command a premium. To fully attribute the coin, pay attention to the feathers at the areas indicated by the red arrows. That will help narrow down which reverse this is. I can't see the details well enough to pin it down.

I'd say both are AU.

78 - AU53
79 - AU55 just too many marks on both sides to pull an AU58 grade
