Hello,

In the picture attached, the left column has uncirculated sets for '71, '73, and '84. I think these envelopes are authentic. Can someone confirm the ones in the right column, for '77 and '79, are reprints in lieu of having the original available?

I'm a new collector interested in uncirculated CAD and USD govt issued sets and varieties of those sets. The coins themselves are sufficiently nostalgic, I'm more interested in the original plastic and accompanying card. For varieties that cost hundreds of dollars, should I make sure I'm getting the original envelope? Just because I (may have) paid hundreds now doesn't mean it will stay that way, especially if everything isn't original.

95+% of these coins won't apply, but someday when my son goes to sell the more expensive ones off...hopefully well into the future...I want him to get the best return.

Thanks in advance.

The '77 and '79 envelopes are not original. Prooflike sets like these are a great way to collect each denomination for every year but they will not likely increase in value. Sets made from 1968 to the 1980's had an original issue price of $4 to $8. Most dealers buy these sets for $3 to $5 each these days so its not something your son will likely make money on. The best investment for new collectors without substantial knowledge of the coin market is to just buy gold coins at spot price followed by silver coins also at spot price.

The '77 and '79 are not original.
I've seen a number of these for sale by a major Eastern dealer.
You can buy each set with original packaging for $7US, or less.
If OGP is a requisite for you, it's quite inexpensive to replace them.

Thank you. I'm just interested in the coins, I don't see them ever becoming valuable monetarily. I'd like to make sure I'm purchasing the original envelopes for the rare variants to help them maintain their value. Cheers

Thanks again! Am I supposed to close this question off or accept Andy888's answer somehow? I just wanted confirmation envelopes are not original. I'm not seeking additional advice related to this as an investment. I don't think it is, I'm just really enjoying the coins.
