I found this last night... looks like a 1990 D penny, but just on the left of the D is what looks like the remnants of an S. Or it might be a piece of crud that just looks like an S, I can't tell. But I'm pretty sure it's an RPM, as the "s" is raised slightly and is copper colored.

So, I think I might have identified my very first repunched mint mark! (Is that the right term, seeing as how it's not exactly "repunched" it's more of a dual mintmark?)

Also, does anyone have any advise on how to go about cleaning it? What looks like verdigris in the picture is actually probably paint- the back as a lot of paint. I've heard acetone is a good cleaner, but that seems a bit strong and like it might damage.

Thanks

Welcome to the forum. From 1990, the mint mark was added on the master hub, eliminating the striking of each working die with a mint mark. Thus it would be extremely unlikely for such an OMM to occur. I would say it is almost assuredly is what you said,

. I have ran into other dates where the same has happened, but when I compared carefully the shape of the "crud" with the specific mint mark, I had no doubts. It does seem that around 1994 some mint marks were ground off and the dies reworked, but I have not seen one personally.
