My mom has decided to sell a $1,000 bill she has in her possession. I will be helping her but have no background in currency collectibles. Should we have the bill graded? It is a 1934 bill minted in Kansas City, Missouri. I would label it in very good condition, BUT my Dad wrote a date on the back of the bill in ink so I'm wondering how much that devalues it. Appreciate the help. I've attached images. Thanks for the help. Edited by LeeLoo 04/12/2024 2:35 pm

Welcome to CCF. High denomination ($500 & $1,000) notes are extremely hot right now. Personally, I would have the ink notations professionally removed. Google "Poli Restoration" for contact information. Nancy Poli and her daughter are the industry experts in paper money restoration and repair.
After that, I'd definitely have it graded by either PMG or PCGS.

Steve's suggstions are spot-on. Have the note conserved and then professionally graded before sellinig.

LeeLoo, Please let us know if you have it conserved. After photos would be nice. What all the costs involved was etc. Shipping there, shipping back, insurance, cost of conserving. John1

Just to be pedantic, it was printed in Washington, D.C. by the Bureau of Engraving and Printing and issued by the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City, Missouri. Sometimes I just can't help myself.

$1,000 in 1934 is equivalent in purchasing power to about $23,308.36 today, an increase of $22,308.36 over 90 years. The dollar had an average inflation rate of 3.56% per year between 1934 and today, producing a cumulative price increase of 2,230.84%. So let's see .this note sells for about $3000 today . About 250 to 350 to so call restore . Another 150 to grade . 50 Saint Gaudens 20 dollars put away around the same time (1000 face ) worth about 150 K today . 1000 invested at 5 per cent compound annual abt 90 K This note as a beauty investment.not !

I've never seen a bill that large. Thank you for posting the pics. TBH if I had run across this note, I would have thought it was play money most likely. Yes I have heard about the large bills, it's not something for myself to actually expect to see. The guys involved with this forum seem to very knowledgeable in this field. I would trust them on the advice. Thanks again
