Hi everyone,

I have started a collection for both of my youngsters. The collection is coins with animals on them, since I think it sparks there interest.

I currently have for them:

Most of the Canadian animal coins like the nickel, quarter, loonie and twonie. I also have a couple of the 67 coins with the rabbit on the nickel, the fish on the dime etc.

A Irish coin with a rabbit on it.

A New Zealand six pence with a bird

A Australian penny and 1/2 penny with a Kangaroo (Thanks Kurt)

A UK wren farthing.

I am going to a coin show this weekend and would like some ideas of other countries that have animals on their coins. The more fun the better. And Cheap is GOOD

If anyone has any suggestions, I would love to hear them. Feel free to add pics with your ideas if you have them.

Thanks in advance for your help building their collections.

Australian decimal coins (except for the $2) all have Australian native animals on them. The predecimal shilling 1938-1963 has a sheep.

Most Irish pre-Euro coins have animals on them. The predecimal coin series is colloquially known as the "barnyard series".

The Philippines ran a series of coins in the 1980's and 1990's featuring local animals.

Singapore's first series of coins features local wildlife, mainly fish.

Norwegian coins from 1958 to 1973 also feature a series of animals. The coins might be trickier to find.

Your traditional exotic African animals often feature on the coins of African nations. South Africa, Malawi and Botswana are all rich pickings for the animal thematic collector.

Zimbabwe coins have animals on them. Of course, there are eagles on a lot of US coins. Ethiopia has lions on coins. I think there is a Central American country with coins of a Quetzal, but that might be the name of the currency, not what is on it.

After that mean comment about the drilling I fully intend to tempt you.
Stay away from the auction section for a few days as something might pop up there later today...

Thanks for the ideas, keep them coming...

NoHope, since you warned me to stay away for the auctions, you know I will be checking it every hour on the hour.

Of course I was just kidding about the Karma thing. A couple weeks ago I made a Pinking Ring out of a dateless SLQ. I did it the "Spoon" technique way. (OK the Hammer technique way). I wish I could figure out how to do it the way you are making them. I figured I would need some type of Jeweler's "ring making" anvil of some kind. Unless you are guarding it as a trade secret, I would love to get a PM'd tip on what I could use.

There's also the Canada 1967 Centennial series
1c: dove
5c: rabbit
10c: Atlantic mackerel
25c: lynx
50c: wolf
$1: Canada goose
Nice designs overall, and it's easy to find a PL set for cheap.
Of course, there are a few more animals on Canada coins, such as the beaver 5c and Loonie dollar. But why are none on US coins?

Hi,

A-Request-For-Ideas-For-Coins-With-Animals-On-Them...

The Namibian $5 coin depicts the African Fish Eagle. Face value is worht about a US half dollar.

The Namibian $l coin depicts the Bateleur Eagle. Face value is worth about a US dime.

I have posted all of Namibian spare coins over on the trade forum.

Incidentally, if your kids are old enough, bring them to the show with you. I've been bringing my son since he was five and it never fails that some one will either give him something for free or drastically reduce their prices.

Many African countries have beautiful naturalistic animal pictures, or have had quite recently. Most of them, actually. So try looking in the African sector, if any such exists. Besides Africa, former British dominions also have some very nice ones. Belize, Bermuda, Bahamas, Barbados, Tridinad & Tobago...and also current British areas like Isle of Man, Gibraltar, Guernsey, Falkland Islands....all these have whole series of coins with animal pictures. There is plenty of material to be found, and none of these are particularly expensive. Good luck with the hunt!

There is a really cool coin from Mongolia with some sort of creature on it. Seems to be a 500 Togrog Silver coin from the last few years.

£50 english pounds, maybe $75 US. If you like that sort of thing of course.
