Hi there. So I found this nickel in a roll of nickels that had been in the roll since the 80s. I am very curious as to what is going on with it. The date and a few other areas definitely look doubled and the coin itself looks strange. Not sure if it's damage or an error. Can I please get some insight on this? It is also missing the initials of the coins designer on the obverse.

Heavy Die Deterioration, along with orange peel, and Die Deterioration Doubling. Your coin was struck with a worn out die.

Extreme die wear. the lines from the center to the rim are called 'radial flow lines' from the die expanding and contracting over thousands of times as it struck the planchets.

I agree, that is one late die state. The devices often take a melted butter appearance in that situation.
