American Numismatic Society - Certain drachms from the Cretan cities of Gortyna, Phalasarna, and Polyrrhenia were overstruck on Kyrenaika coins. These drachm types, each from a single obverse die, were assessed to identify the undertype. Several specimens have enough detail remaining to determine that the host coin is a specific Kyrenaika type of similar weight. John Tatman will discuss the process and techniques used to identify the undertype. Most likely, these coins were paid to the three cities when they supported Magas during his independent rule of Kyrenaika circa 280-270 BC.
