American Numismatic Society = Following the monetary dislocation of the third century CE, Diocletian aimed to restore the Augustan coinage structure. From 293 onward, gold, silver, large billon, and fractional bronze coins provided a full range of denominations for an empire restored to its former glory. However, the Tetrarchy quickly unraveled after the abdication of Maximian and Diocletian in 305. Quite a few civil wars later, Constantine emerged as the sole emperor in 324. ANS Executive Director Gilles Bransbourg will discuss how, during these twenty years, Roman coins reflected the economic and political crisis that led to the Christian empire.
