I just got in this 1840 O seated half and it has some unique die cracks on the reverse that have allowed me to narrow the variety to WB-2 according to Bill Bugert's reference. He says it is a very rare variety at an R-6. He also cross references it to WB-104 which several other references (PCGS/NGC) list as a different die all together....? PCGS lists a WB-2 as a die variety of the 1840 O but has no picture or description. A search of Heritage past auctions brings up WB-104's but none are this variety. Any help in determining the proper attribution and relative premium on this variety would be appreciated!

Have you examined the reeding? There are some other tell tales in them, it looks like a WB-2 but I can't rule out the WB-1 conclusively. I'm sending the link to a friend in the LSSCC that might be able to help more. Hoping for a WB-2 for you.

I have not examined the reeding. The 8 in the date does have re-punching and there are rust dots all over the obverse portrait. Neither of these things are easy to photograph, but they are definitely there. It also shows none of the markers for the WB-1 on the obverse.

I couldn't tell on the 8 from your photos. I believe it is the WB-2 based on your input. Great find, My friend is getting ready to host the Liberty Seated Meeting tomorrow, it will be free to stream on Zoom from the CSNS in Illinois. The NNP Symposium is ongoing now, I'm watching Greg Rohan of Heritage expound on the current market in a few minutes. Find the links here:

If Len has the time he will look at the link and show it to other specialists in the Liberty Seated collecting, hopefully.

Yes, congrats, this is a WB-2 as the date placement is correct. The date is a little bit higher than the WB-1 and the 4 in the date is strong where on the WB-1 it is very weak. Also the WB-1 has die cracks around/through all of the stars & through the date and I do not see that in your images. This coin is a high enough grade where if it was a WB-1 you would see the Cuds along the rim and yours does not. WB-1 and WB-2 share the same reverse so it is all about the obverse for the designation.

Roach I confirmed it also from my friend Len, President of the Liberty Seated Collectors Society.

His reply to me after I had him look at your link...

Quote:
Definitely reverse A, so must be WB-1 or WB-2. I think WB-2 because it does not have the weak date as on WB-1, or the obverse circular die crack as on WB-1. Bugert notes obverse die lumps on WB-2, which are probably more apparent with the coin in hand.
