This coin has an open fissure along a crack in the planchet. It does not have the typical beveled edges of a rolling fissure, but the interior edges somewhat mate. The reverse side of the original planchet also seems to have had a swatch of material lost from delamination. So when the coin was struck there wasn't much detail struck in the lamination area, and the fissure along the crack opened up. Or something rather similar to that. What looks a lot like a Cud at the bottom is just a rolled over hook of metal and not a Cud.

For verification, the coin has a diameter in all directions of 19.1, so it was fully struck in the collar and has not "grown" due to circulation. It weighs 2.48g.

Wow! That's a nice chomp taken out of the planchet!

Thanks folks! There are a ridiculous number of ragged clips in this lot I bought and will probably post some when I get a chance.

Cool error, and good description.

Another nice dental floss or fishing line cutter for the collection ;)
