I won these two coins in an ebay auction. The seller thought they were silver but, in bidding, I considered that they might be contemporary counterfeits.

The 1818 looks very nice and has silver peeking through the toning, but its weight is 2.60 grams, less than the 2.83 grams it should weigh, so I think it is a counterfeit.

The 1816 doesn't look nearly as nice as the 1818 and has lots of copper showing. I definitely think this one is a counterfeit. Its weight is 2.52 grams.

As I said, I think that both coins are contemporary counterfeits but am interested in hearing the opinions of other group members.

I would say you are right, Paul. Both busts look off to me.

I would agree - both contemporary counterfeits in my opinion. Still collectable to some extent, but not as much as the real silver ones.

They'll be interesting curios for my British collection.

I've got a counterfeit half crown made at about the same time, tin washed over a bronze/lead core. Sometimes I think I've seen more of the fakes out and about than I have seen of good silver.

Yes, curios for sure! Especially if you compare the numerals of the dates and their alignment to genuine specimens.
Then what you're most curious about is how they ever passed in circulation, as these two obviously did!
I'm particularly enjoying the way that 1818 seems to be stumbing down a flight of stairs...
Wasn't the penalty for this sort of thing the hangman's noose?
