Greetings, I have been collecting various coins for several years. I wish to start US 1/2 cents. Is there anything specific to this breed that I should look out for, that is different than other US coins? They are not cheap and I do not want forgeries or the like:-) Thanks much..

Half Cents are pretty straight forward. If I were doing a set, I would complete draped busts, classic head cents and braided hairs by date or die variety, and buy the 1793 and liberty cap as types. The 1796 is too expensive for a normal collector, they usually start at five figures.

My fave is the 1804 Spiked Chin Variety. (there are multiple varieties in this year).I recommend a certified specimen. I have not seen fakes, but I am sure they are out there. Higher grades are getting up there. I bought mine in 1972 for like $4.00 US. Good Luck in your venture.

You also would like an attribution reference, either Cohen's original or the more recent Manley's die state progression book. Manley is tough and expensive to find.

I'm focused more on large cents and have a more extensive collection of them. I got interested in Half Cents because they are old copper and I'm an EAC member but I don't have a specific goal. I buy the ones I see and like and I have a collection in VF/XF grades but am not driven to complete it. I find them less expensive than large cents in the same grades. Enjoy the search!
