Anyone seen a case like this before?
Aftermarket I assume.

I sent one of the dollars in to ICCS, which did come back SP64, but not so sure about the other 3...they look PL.

Definitely looks after market and I don't think I have ever seen the Mint issue some that identifies the types. In addition, it lacks any indication that it was from the Mint.

Great news on 1965 Sp dollar, a tougher one to find. Photos would be great.

According to the 2016 ICCS population report, the majority of the 1965 specimen dollars were the small beads, blunt 5 variety.

This one is the rarer small beads, pointed 5. And a UHC to boot.

Looks suspiciously similar to Capital Plastics
presentation holders of the 1960s.
Beautiful coin you pictured!

Is that a carbon spot above the N and what is under the date?

Yes, a carbon spot under the N.

It looks like some haze under the date, but only at certain angles, so maybe its on the holder?

Id say most likely an aftermarket custom case, very cool item !

Here's what I have regarding the original, as-issued sets, that would explain why they are so often pristine and untoned and why no true specimen case surfaced... this is the third time I see mention of 1965 specimen set being issued similarly to the PL set so I think this is somewhat legit. (they did issue some Sp dollars in leather case) :

Id love to see one of those red card one day...

I think this is what the red specimen case looks like for dollars.

Came from S. Belzberg directly and he though it was for specimen dollars, it came to me with a nicely toned 1962 PL dollar.

@dollar - very interesting, thanks for posting!

@purely - I remember you posting this awhile back and there was some debate around whether it was a specimen

That is indeed a specimen dollar case, used as early as 1949 to my understanding. There is record of 1949s coming directly from the mint in them, and I recall a story from I think paccoin about 1953 specimen dollars coming in them from a department store. Very cool items, I have a handful tucked away.

That is the one. ICCS gave it a PL65.

The red case is absolutely correct for Specimen / Special strike
Dollars as early as 1949 . I acquired a couple of 1953 DOLLAR
Pieces years ago in UK.
