I was at a yard sale recently and mentioned to the guy that I was interested in coins. He didn't have any out but invited me to come back the next day to look at his collection. He indicated he was interesting in moving it eventually.

The next day I took a look. Mostly 19th-century and early 20th-century silver, nothing special jumped out at me. Then he showed me this coin (see below) and he asked me what it was. I told him I had no idea but that I'd run it by my friends at CCF. I did figure out that Roman-numeral date reads 1856.

Anybody? Anybody?

cannot really read the lettering from all the flattening and damage, but it may have something to do with the Burckhardt family. This could be a Swiss coin or medal..

Captain Mandrake, you should be promoted to general--at least! Thank you.

That obverse date is easy. But I never would have figured out without the captain's links that the reverse imagery of "harp-three-horseshoes-axe-six-jugs" was supposed to stand for "MCCCLIIIIII" (the date 1356). Talk about cryptochronology.
