I've found that an acetone bath for copper (and other metal) coins will remove grease, oils and various contaminants improving the effectiveness of chemical treatments.

coinfrog - this is the same coin and goes to show how just a little angle of the camera can alter what we see however when looking at my before and after photo. here is a better shot of the original coin where you can see the spots and scratches. should have posted this one. you can see how angle can really affect what we see. this is a great example.
