I recently bought a group of twenty two 3c Nickels. They were cheap enough @ $5 each. Quite a few details coins but I thought there just might be some varieties in the group .... and it appears I got lucky with three varieties.

I'm Lincoln Cent fan so I'm not sure where to look up the varieties to find markers. So that's why I turned to all of you here.

I'll post the three in chronological order starting with this 1865. The re-punching is the easiest to see on this one. it is well separated to the south on the secondary date and I'm guessing it's FS 304. Unfortunately, the overall condition of the coin is poor with some verdi on it.

Let me know your thoughts and thanks for taking a look.

(I'll post the other two over the weekend.)

Thanks guys. (Not sure why the reverse image is sideways. )

I finally found some info one the NGC Variety Plus site.
Here's the link for those that are interested.
https://www.ngccoin.com/variety-plu...1889/?page=1

They have much better images than mine (Duh!).

I'm surprised there isn't a 3c nickel site listing varieties like Doubledies, coppercoins , or Variety Vista.

EDIT: I take that back. There is some reference material on the "unloved" Three Cent Nickel. Most of the reference material is in book form.
Here is a quote from a thread at Collectors Universe from 2009.
RichieURich said "The Ultimate Guide to U. S. Three Cent Nickels 1865 - 1889 by Allan Gifford. Book is very difficult to find.

The Authoritative Reference on Three Cent Nickels by Kevin Flynn and Edward Fletcher.

The Authoritative Reference on Three Cent Silver Coins by Kevin Flynn and Winston Zack."

Not anymore.
You can browse it or download it as a PDF from the Newman Numismatic Portal:
https://nnp.wustl.edu/library/book/555545

To download, put your mouse over the cover photo.
Just below the upper left corner is an circle icon with 3 dots, like (...) .
Click on it and then select PDF. ..."

I know everyone's on the edge of their seat waiting for the variety numbers, soooo I'll let you know what I find out.

Well, this coin is FS304 but thanks to "The Ultimate Guide to U.S. Three Cent Nickels: 1865 to 1889" by Allan Gifford at the Newman Numismatic Portal ( https://nnp.wustl.edu/library/book/555545 ), page #81, I was able to nail down a more precise Variety number and description. There were markers to confirm also.
This coin is described on page #81 as "1865 B17a, Repunched date & Quadruple clashed dies"
(1865 B17b has the clash marks so heavily and thoroughly polished/removed that there are raised areas on the coins where the clash marks had been.)

Wish me luck on my other two varieties. There is a lot of info at that link to learn and understand but I like the challenge.
